Change Your World In A Weekend
Presented at ENG on June 1, 2006 by Dr. Bruce Bloom
Summarized by Warren McBride
Overview Pathways to Successful Living Seminars provide a framework for personal growth that is an on-going, ever-evolving process. The premise of the work is the more fulfilled, enriched, and stronger we are in meeting life's challenges, the more compassionate, supportive, and empowering we are with our spouse, children, family members, friends, colleagues, and even strangers. Biography Dr. Bruce Bloom is President and Chief Science Officer of Partnership for Cures, a public charity that accelerates the search for cures for catastrophic diseases. He combines twenty-five years of business experience in healthcare, law, clinical research, insurance, entrepreneurial enterprises, regulatory affairs, product development, and public speaking into his current role. Previously, Dr. Bloom was the Goldman Philanthropic Partnerships; Senior Vice President-Healthcare Professional Liability at Kemper Casualty Company; Director of Loss Control, Sr. VP of CNA Insurance Companies; and Director of Professional Relations and Clinical Affairs at Bausch and Lomb Oral Care Division. “Change Your World In A Weekend” Dr. Bruce Bloom gave us a structured approach to making behavior changes in our business and personal lives. The message was a capsule summary of a weekend seminar/workshop that he supports – Pathways to Successful Living. We all have an impact on what is around us and in turn we are impacted by what is around us (Premise #1). We are all also continually in relationships – even if we are by ourselves (Premise #2). Dr. Bloom counseled us to learn to have a positive impact on these relationships by learning to act differently. “If I always do what I have always done, then I will always get what I always had.” The change process applies to all relationships including those impossible ones of dealing with our teenage children. The stepping off point is focusing on goals and dreams – i.e. avoid asking the Cheshire cat for directions; c.f. Alice in Wonderland. Our beliefs and behaviors need examination to implement what supports us and to drop what impedes us (or perhaps just no longer support us). Starting the journey is up to us: few things just happen to us or for us. Be your own leader. Communication and teamwork along with communication are also part of the change process and would be covered more fully in the Pathways weekend seminar.
