cgsQuest President Catherine G. Sutherland's presentation to the June 23 Executive Network Group (ENG) meeting -- Headhunter is Not a Dirty Word, or How to work with an Executive Recruiter -- provided a roadmap for dealing with intermediaries during transition. Sutherland's format offered a careers worth of wisdom within a Late Show with Letterman-like format. Her Top Ten Tips to Improve Your Relationship with an Executive Recruiter included the following:10. Executive Recruiters
come in all
shapes, sizes, colors, and integrity standards! Important
distinctions: Is the firms revenue contingent upon placement
or are they retained for the specific search? Is their scope
national, regional, or local? Are they specialists within
your industry or placement generalists?
9. Always take (or return) a recruiter's call. 8. Dont make yourself fit the spec -- make the spec fit you! 7. The recruitment game is like the dating game -- the harder you play to get, the more they like to chase you. 6. Give best-in-class referrals and they will remember you. 5. Be open and flexible about new opportunities. You may have no intention of relocating, or taking a lower title, or having less responsibility, but hear out the opportunity. A more attractive position may be right around the corner. 4. Remember Mark Twain's advice: Honesty is the best policy. 3. Just as you dont depend on your doctor for personal health do not depend on a recruiter for your career health. 2. Dont get mad at the messenger. 1. Finding a wonderful recruiter is like cold calling. All you need is one good one and you forget about all the rejection!
